Mozart’s history

Mozart is a hamlet south of the Quill Lakes, within the Rural Municipality of Elfros No. 307. It was founded in 1909 and named for the Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. The streets carry on the theme, with many named after other famous classical composers. Locals say the z in the name has its ordinary English sound, not the German "ts" of the composer's name.

The hamlet has marked its musical name in some memorable ways. In 1991, the 200th anniversary of the composer's death, Mozart's postmaster created a special postmark. That September, the local hall hosted a concert in which several players from the Regina Symphony Orchestra performed works by Mozart. The concert was recorded for CBC-TV's "Adrienne Clarkson Presents" and was also covered by a CTV "The Provincial Report" news crew.

The RM of Elfros held centennial celebrations from July 24 to 26, 2009. The town's street names also earned a mention on an episode of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire that first aired on November 8, 2010.
